Bock 195

The Bock 195 is an extremely versatile cardioid pattern, large diaphragm condenser microphone designed to sound excellent on unusually varied sources. It features a proprietary and sizeable hand-built output transformer and custom Bock electronics for higher than typical low-end headroom.

The FAT/Norm switch allows you to choose between two frequency responses that are suited to the task at hand. The FAT setting offers a steady rise in the low-end response making it a perfect choice for beefing up kick drums, toms, bass cabs, or adding some girth to guitars. The Norm setting offers a flatter low-end response allowing the 195 to do its thing as one of the best FET-based LDC’s on the market. Additionally, a “Lowcut” (low frequency roll-off) switch (which alters the low-end curve) combined with the FAT/Norm switch, provides up to four, unique response curves from this one microphone. With the varying proximity effect, bass boost, and switches you have an extremely flexible and interesting condenser. Finally, it also offers a 10db pad for those high SPL moments -- a specific weakness of many condenser microphones.

The Bock 195 is a great choice for everything from vocals and acoustic guitars, to loud guitar amps and even the very best grand pianos. Bock 251

The Bock 251 is designed to emulate the sonic footprint of the very best examples of the legendary, vintage, German-built Telefunken ® ELA M 251. The Bock 251 offers 3 selectable polar patterns (omni, cardioid, and figure 8). Among many other distinct advantages, the 251 features a custom, German, CK12-type capsule designed by Bock, a very large four-section transformer (which actually gives the Bock 251 a wider frequency bandwidth than that of the original ELA M 251!), and a new/old stock (NOS) tube. David Bock’s unique design takes the “251” sound to a new level, actually lowering the self-noise and improving unit-to-unit consistency when compared to the original.

The Bock 251 is a microphone that is a perfect choice for pristine, “larger than life” vocals and detailed fine instruments whether up close or at a distance. In fact, it captures the “vintage vibe” so well it’s practically indescribable but without sounding over the top. Bock 241

The Bock 241 was originally conceived as a cardioid-only version of the Bock 251 with the objective of creating an incredibly affordable, premier, vocal microphone of exceptional quality. It adds a Bright/Normal switch, which allows you to select between the vintage sounding warmth (Norm) and the more modern sounding extended high frequency response (Bright). The Bright setting makes it a great choice for today’s pop vocal style.

We have found that while this mic shares many characteristics of the 251, it has some pretty cool character of its own! Bock 507

The Bock 507 (or 5 ZERO 7) is truly a unique work of art. In developing the 507, David Bock joined forces with George Cardas to design a unique elliptical-shaped capsule that addresses the in-band resonance issues inherent in many round-shaped capsules. The diaphragm edges are terminated in a “golden spiral” which provides for a vast reduction of dimensional and dynamic duplications in the diaphragm. The elliptical shape allows the diaphragm to be free of the signal absorption, reflection, and resonance issues inherent in many large diaphragm, round capsules. All of this delivers a smoothness of sound (not too bright, not too dark) ideally suited for both male and female vocals.

The amplifier section of the Bock 507 is based on a vintage style (think U 47) design. Employing a very large, custom Bock-designed, four-section transformer allows for a very wide frequency response. Even the power supply is unique in that it is an inductor design, just like the vintage mics of yesteryear. All of this results in a very special microphone that sounds very true to the source and has a touch of the vintage vibe people love from classic 47’s. Butch Vig’s personal favorite vocal mic, the 507 really needs to be heard on your best vocalist to be appreciated.
